Zone files as early warning, instead of a UDRP after the site is built

Muhammad Shahzaib of EUNOMATIX has the numbers on UDRP and the argument for using zone data instead. Trademark owners filed a record 6,282 UDRP complaints with WIPO in 2025, up from 6,168 in 2024, from brand owners in 133 countries; more than 4,000 are already filed in 2026. About 70% end with the domain transferred to the complainant. “By the time a UDRP complaint is filed, the harm is already done,” and each dispute costs thousands of dollars and months of process.

ICANN’s Centralized Zone Data Service came out of the 2012 round: the base Registry Agreement obliges participating gTLD registries to publish their zone files through one portal, now more than a thousand gTLDs, refreshed daily. Diffing yesterday’s zone against today’s yields every newly delegated domain across all of them, which is where a swapped character or a brand-plus-keyword registration shows up on the day it is delegated rather than after a site has been stood up on it. Zone files also map each name to its nameservers, so one confirmed infringing domain leads to the rest of the portfolio parked on the same infrastructure — the pattern evidence UDRP panels weigh heavily.

A 70% transfer rate on a remedy that arrives after the harm is the same shape as a correct attestation on a call already delivered. The mechanism works and the timing is the problem.

CZDS has been open to anyone with a lawful purpose since 2014, and the UDRP filing record keeps getting broken. Whatever the constraint is, it is not access to the data.
